Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco /Km 104/Aguas Calientes

The first day you will be picked up early from your hotel and begin the 3-hour journey to the starting point of the trek.  You will be transferred, by bus, to Ollantaytambo train station where we will provide you with a boxed lunch and energy drinks prior to boarding.  Along our train journey, you will see snow-capped mountains, spectacular views of farmlands, valleys and the mighty Urubamba River, a source of the Amazon River.  We will disembark at Km 104 where we will first explore the Inca site, Chachabamba (2050m).  This site is known for its' beautiful location and unusually well-preserved architecture.  After exploring the site, we will begin the trek with a 3-hour climb to another archeological site, Wiñaywayna (2650m) also known as “Forever Young”.  This site, which boasts an elaborate water fountain, temples and agricultural terraces will serve as our lunch stop for the day.  After lunch we will hike through semi-tropical forests to Inti Punku (2490m) or the “Sun Gate” where we will catch our first glimpse of the majestic city of Machu Picchu.  Clear skies will reveal incredible views of the Urubamba River, impressive mountain peaks and other surrounding Inca sites. From the Sun Gate, we will have a 45-minute descent in to Machu Picchu.  Once we reach the citadel, we will have a short time to explore before we board a bus to Aguas Calientes (2040m).  In Aguas Calientes we will check in to our hotel and enjoy a hot shower before dinner.  You will also be given the option of visiting some hot springs located just on the outskirts of town.  Tonight we will turn in early to prepare for the early-morning bus-ride back up to Machu Picchu.
