Before starting a tour to Machu Picchu for the sacred snow of Salkantay you must have a series of accessories for the road. as a backpack that will be your companion during the days of the tour. We went on to detail the things your backpack should contain:

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata – Soraypampa

Your guide will pick you up early from your Cusco hotel to begin the 3-hour drive via private car to the town of Mollepata where we will stop for breakfast.  After breakfast, we will continue our journey to Challacancha (3300m) the starting point of your trek.  On the way you will observe a wide variety of native plants, flowers and birds. Acclimation is important; therefore, today’s walk will be short.  We will begin by walking for 3 hours on an ondulating trail to Soraypampa where we will stop for lunch and it will be our campsite too. After lunch, we will hike for 2 hours, back and forth to visit turquoise Humantay Lake (4200 m/13700ft) which is pretty famous for its  turquoise water and you will have the unique opportunity to appreciate the most beautiful landscapes in the Salkantay area.

Day 2 : Soraypampa / Huayracmachay /  Chaullay

Today will be the longest and most difficult day of the trek.  We will wake up very early and after a quick breakfast begin the hike to the highest part of the trail.   The first 4 hours of trekking are very steep with some narrow spots and switch backs.  You will climb through the rocky  Salkantay pass, and will then descend the far side in to the warm and lush cloud forests where we will stop for lunch. The afternoon hike will consist of a 3-hour trek through the Amazon.  The scenery along today’s trek is simply spectacular as you will see everything from snow-covered mountains in the highlands to dense vegetation and thick jungle while hiking through the Amazon.  You may also see some wildlife along today’s trek such as Chinchillas, Andean Deer, foxes and pumas.  Tonight we will camp at Chaullay (3000 m/9800 ft) where you will have the option to shower.  It is highly recommended that you continually apply insect repellent from this point in the trek on, as the mosquitoes in this area have a nasty bite.

Day 3 :  Chaullay – La Playa – Santa Teresa

Today we will wake up at 6 a.m. and continue our journey through the jungle.  The weather during this part of the trek is drastically different than the previous day.  It will be less cloudy and more warm and sunny.  We will observe many different birds and flowers, including orchids.  We will also see various banana plantations and other fruits and vegetables grown by the local farmers.   We will trek through dense vegetation, crossing an old bridge and enjoying a beautiful waterfall after which we will stop in the village of Playa Sahuyaco and have lunch. After lunch, we will travel for one hour via private car, to Santa Teresa where we will camp for the evening.  There is a natural hot springs in Santa Teresa you may choose to enjoy.

Day 4 : Santa Teresa – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes

Today you are given the opportunity to sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.  The first part of the day you may relax or participate in a Ziplining excursion.  The afternoon will be spent exploring the Santa Teresa-Ccollpani Grande Hydroelectric Plant, which is the main source of electricity in the Machupicchu district, Urubamba province, Cusco; here we will have lunch.  After visiting the hydroelectric plant we will hike for 3 hours along the train tracks towards the delightful town of Aguas Calientes. Along the tracks we will stop and visit an Incan site called Inti Huatana. Once we arrive in Aguas Calientes we will check in to our hotel.  This will be followed by some free time and we will meet up later for dinner.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Cusco

In an attempt to capture a beautiful sunrise over Machu Picchu, you will have an early breakfast and then catch one of the first buses to the park.  Once you arrive in Machu Picchu, you will be given a 2-hour guided tour and then you will have some time to explore on your own.  You may choose a 1.5 hour hike to the Sun Gate or a 1 hour hike to the Inca Bridge; these hikes are free to all.

Most of the train departures to Ollantaytambo are in the afternoon, please be aware of the time. After disembarking the train in Ollantaytambo, you will be transferred to your hotel in Cusco, by car.
